Whangamatā Welcomes New Zealand’s Snooker Community

Each year, the coastal town of Whangamatā becomes a gathering place for snooker enthusiasts from across New Zealand, as 48 players come together for an eagerly anticipated annual snooker tournament. Accompanied by supporters, family and friends, competitors travel from near and far to enjoy a weekend of competition, camaraderie and a shared passion for the game.

More than just a sporting event, the tournament has become an opportunity to bring people together, celebrate the skill and tradition of snooker, and enjoy the warm hospitality that Whangamatā is known for.
With 48 players taking their place around the tables, the tournament promises plenty of action, as competitors put their concentration, patience and precision to the test. Snooker is a game that rewards much more than simply potting balls. Careful planning, tactical play, nerves of steel and the ability to perform under pressure can make all the difference between victory and defeat.

Every frame brings its own challenges, with players needing to think several shots ahead and make the most of every opportunity. For the competitors, it is a chance to test their abilities against fellow enthusiasts, while spectators can enjoy the excitement and drama that unfold throughout the competition.
Whether it is a closely fought frame, a cleverly executed safety shot or an impressive break, there is always something to appreciate for those who love the game.

One of the highlights of the annual event is the community spirit that surrounds it. Players and their supporters arrive from all corners of New Zealand, bringing with them a wealth of experience, friendly rivalries and plenty of enthusiasm.
While the competition on the tables is serious, the atmosphere away from them is equally important. Catching up with old friends, meeting new faces, sharing stories and enjoying a few laughs are all part of what makes the tournament special.
For many, the event is as much about the friendships formed over the years as it is about the final results. The shared love of snooker creates an instant connection, bringing people together through a sport that values respect, patience and good sportsmanship.

Hosting an event of this size also provides a welcome opportunity to showcase Whangamatā to visitors from throughout the country. Known for its beautiful coastline, relaxed atmosphere and welcoming community, the town offers an appealing setting for competitors and supporters to enjoy their time away from the snooker table.
Visitors can take the opportunity to explore the local area, enjoy the cafés and eateries, and experience the charm of a Coromandel town that has plenty to offer beyond the sporting arena.

Events such as this can also provide a valuable boost for local businesses, with visiting players and supporters contributing to the town's hospitality and tourism sector.

The annual Whangamatā snooker tournament is a celebration of everything that makes the sport enjoyable: competition, skill, determination, friendship and community spirit. Bringing together 48 players and their supporters from around New Zealand, it provides a memorable occasion for everyone involved.

While there can only be one tournament winner, the rewards extend well beyond the trophy. New friendships, renewed connections and shared memories ensure that everyone has something to take away from the event.
As another tournament draws to a close, attention will inevitably turn to next year's gathering, when players and supporters will once again make their way to Whangamatā for another opportunity to compete, reconnect and celebrate their love of snooker.

For a town that prides itself on its welcoming atmosphere, the annual tournament is a fitting reminder that sport has a special ability to bring people together — one frame at a time.

The Tournament runs from 13 November to Sunday 15 November at the Whangamata Club Inc and the Whangamata RSA. Section play starts on Friday and Saturday morning from 8am until finish. Once qualified the Championship, Plate, Flight and Consolation Plate are run on a knock out basis and we are expecting the semi-finals and finals to be held on Sunday afternoon at the Whangamata Club.

If you would like to satisfy your curiosity we would like to see you there.

Golden Oldies

Our mature senior members enjoy an active inter-club fellowship against Waihi Beach and Te Aroha teams, with home and away games.

This group will be run this year by Alex van den Einden 021 432 507, assisted by Jim Devine.

Contact him if you want to know more about this group and what they are up to.

A team of skilled snooker players headed off to Hamilton on Thursday 8th October for their annual inter-club fixture against the Hamilton Cosmopolitan Club.

Unfortunately,  Whangamata was not successful in winning the Trophy back, so it remains in Hamilton.

Better luck next year guys.

Congratulations Hamilton.

As Arnold might say - we'll be back.......
