Clubs NZ 8 Ball North Island Championships Report by Ryan Wilson

Just wanted to say again a big thank you from Dave and I for being able to represent the club at the recent club NZ 8 Ball North Island Championships, we certainly had a blast!

Key Results:

  • Early Bird Tournament (played day before the tournament started)

    • 32 players

    • Dave got through to the Final but lost to Nik Hinga (a 4 time North Island Champion)

  • Doubles:

    • 150 players

    • We qualified 9th seed on day 1, only losing 3-2 to the eventual winners Nik Hinga and Phil brazier (both former winners of the North Island Champs)

    • We then lost our round of 32 game on day 2, so moved down to the Championship Flight Knockout bracket (essentially the 2nd of 4 brackets) which we got through to the semi-final losing 3-2.

  • Singles:

    • 170 players

    • Dave ended up 9th in the tournament which included knocking out the number 1 seed along the way

    • I didn’t qualify to the main round on day 1 but got through to the final 32 on day 2 in the plate.

A number of people mentioned how great it was to see some people representing our club as they hadn’t seen anyone since Red Blake played (which A lot of people also asked about and said how great of a player he was).

All in all, we had a superb week and certainly came up against some very good players and learnt a lot along the way (especially with it being National Rules which we both had never played until the last couple of months).  The tournament was run very well with 16 tables being played on (which might be something Whangamata should try and host 1 year!)

The nationals are in the Mount this year in Oct, so we are thinking about heading down and playing in that as well!
